Learn all about boat building with a four-year apprenticeship with the Met

Did you know that we police 250 miles of London’s waterways? It’s a challenge that’s tackled by our Marine Policing Unit (MPU), who require a first-class fleet. That’s why we’re looking for an enthusiastic apprentice Boat Builder to help maintain our vessels. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn a range of technical skills, and what’s more, there’s full training, great benefits and the chance to gain industry-recognised qualifications.

From lakes and canals to reservoirs and the river Thames, our Marine Policing Unit covers over 250 miles of waterways in London. As a Boat Builder Apprentice, you’ll join an expert boat building team, who repair our vessels and keep them in good condition. Over the course of an exciting four-year apprenticeship, you’ll learn all about fleet maintenance through a range of hands-on work. With your help, our vessels will be ready to race out at a moment’s notice, which means you’ll be supporting frontline policing.

As you gain practical skills working with our friendly, close-knit team, you’ll also be studying for qualifications that can set you up for a great career. Meanwhile, you’ll be learning all sorts of other important abilities, from collaboration and teamwork, to effective organisation. It’s the perfect preparation for an exciting future in Boat Building.

You don’t need experience in engineering – we’ll provide all the training you need. But you must have at least four GCSEs (or equivalent) at A to C grade, and the motivation to learn.

To apply, please visit our website to download a role specific information pack and click on the link to complete and submit the online application form.

We view diversity as fundamental to our success. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, we need a workforce made up from all of London’s communities. Applications from across the community are therefore essential.
